BMW M4 Concept images reveal a loutish hoon-mobile

BMW has just revealed official pictures of the M4. Well, the concept car, at least.

Hopefully the apple won’t fall too far from the tree when it comes to the finished production machine, because the concept looks the absolute business – like it’d punch anyone that looked the wrong way at it. If it had fists, that is.

The standard BMW 4 series is no ugly duckling, but a new front bumper, huge air intakes, a revised kidney grille, quad tailpipes, diffuser bumper, M-style mirrors and a raised boot lid spoiler ensures the M version is properly lairy.

The M4’s engine can back up its aggressive exterior. The V8 found in the outgoing M3 has been replaced with a less thirsty 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 capable of developing somewhere between 416bhp and 430bhp – an improvement on the 414bhp produced by the previous car. Torque, of 398lb/ft, is significantly improved.

That’s enough to launch the car, which is not to be confused with the 4 Series M Performance – from 0 to 62mph in less than 4.5 seconds and onto a limited top speed of 155mph.

The M4 also happens to be a lot lighter than the outgoing M3, which means it should handle better, drink less fuel and go faster.

Power will be channelled through a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission with paddle shift, and an electrically controlled limited slip differential.

BMW is yet to release interior images of the car, but expect a head-up display, sporty seats and plenty of M badges all over the shop.

Prices are expected to start at £58,000 (£3k more than the current M3). A folding hard-top version is also set to see daylight in 2014 along with a four-door variant for those with offspring.
