BMW M5 30 Jahre Edition is 600bhp of German insanity

Special edition BMW M5 becomes the most powerful Bimmer ever offered in the UK.

The already mental BMW M5 has been beaten with the performance stick to create the M5 30 Jahre Edition, which celebrates thirty years of the model. 300 cars will be built worldwide. Just 30 have been allocated to the UK market.

The special edition uses the 4.4-litre M TwinPower Turbo V8 found in the standard M5 fitted with the ‘Competition package’ as standard. Power is increased by 60bhp to 600bhp and torque to 700Nm, making this more powerful than a Ferrari 458 Speciale.

Stick your foot to the floor when stationary and 62mph will be achieved in a mere 3.9 seconds – 0.3 seconds faster than its standard sibling. Keep your foot planted and you could achieve 199mph, making it the fastest production BMW money can buy.

The competition package does more than just add 40 extra ponies. The springs and dampers are given a retune, ride height is decreased by 10mm and the Active M Differential gets its own control unit. This, BMW claims, improves traction.

On the outside the M5 30 Jahre Edition has been given a unique Dark Silver metallic paintjob, ’30 Jahre M5′ badges on the front wing and 20-inch bi-colour M alloy wheels. A number of areas of the car, including the twin exhaust tailpipes, now come in black chrome.

Step inside and you can see more 30 Jahre M5 lettering, a plaque and inscription to indicate which of the 300 cars you own. In case you miss any of those, the 30 Jahre Edition logo is embroidered in the seat backrests.

Standard equipment includes a 1,200-watt Harman Kardon sound system (a Bang & Olufsen option is available), Adaptive LED headlights, split-folding rear seats, M Sport multifunction steering wheel, M Sport seats in Black Alcantara and Full Merino leather and Alcantara Anthracite trim on the centre console and door panels.

BMW kicked off the M5 line with the M535i in 1984. Power was 218bhp from a 3.5-litre six-cylinder, giving it a 0 to 62mph time of 7.2 seconds.
