Driver banned for towing man in wheelchair

A female driver was caught on CCTV towing her wheelchair-bound friend behind her car in the middle of a supermarket car park.

The wheelchair was attached to the boot via a towel trapped in the boot. The 20-year-old then went for a spin at her local Tesco in Roker, Sunderland, according to a report by the BBC.

The stunt, although dangerous, was clearly just a joke between two friends, so surely Maria Adams from Whitburn in South Tyneside got away with nothing more than a slapped wrist, right?

Not quite. Miss Adams found herself on the receiving end of a two-year driving ban. She was also forced to pay £1,369 in ‘prosecution costs’, a £60 victim surcharge, given a four-month curfew and a 12-month community order. Judge Penny Moreland labelled the stunt a “piece of stupidity”.

Now, we acknowledge this was silly, but surely the punishment doesn’t quite fit the crime? Obviously the judge was unfamiliar with ‘lad points’.

Have look at the video and make your own decision on the verdict.
