Fiat 500L Vans Concept is radical, man

If you think the Fiat 500L is ‘off the wall’, wait until you see the concept version Vans has up its gnarly sleeves. The 500L Vans Concept was built specifically for the Vans US Open of Surfing event at Huntington Beach in California.

Somehow the extreme sports brand has made this particular 500L look desirable, which is no easy task when at heart it is basically a Fiat 500 that has eaten one too many doughnuts. On the outside are four LED rings instead of a grille and extra fog lights to enhance its trail-conquering abilities.

A stylish paintjob comprised white, dark grey and a moody blue – with a touch of Vans’ trademark checkerboard pattern on the roof – gives the special edition 500L a distinctive look. Meanwhile parts of the interior are covered in Vans stickers, adding to the surfer-friendly vibe.

Vans has done more than just improve the looks. Functionality has been improved with the addition of a roof rack designed to accommodate two surfboards and other gear for a day at the beach. That disposable BBQ won’t carry itself.

Nothing has gone on in the engine bay, which means you can expect a 1.4-litre turbo 4-cylinder petrol engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Power output is 160hp so there’s enough poke to handle a trip to the water’s edge.

You can check out the Fiat 500L Vans Concept at the 2014 US Open of Surfing event running from July 26th to August 3rd, 2014. There are no plans to make the concept into a reality, so you will have to make do with the following pictures.

Alternatively, how about a Fiat 500 with the engine of a Lamborghini? Yeah, really.
