Fiat revives Tipo name to take on the VW Golf

Fiat has announced a brand new C-segment model that will go toe-to-toe with the new VW Golf, Vauxhall Astra and Ford Focus.

It will be called the Tipo (or the Aegea in Turkey), comes in hatchback, estate and saloon forms and is the evolution of the ‘Aegea Project’ first seen at the Istanbul Motor Show in May 2015.

Fiat’s Tipo saloon variant measures 4.5 metres in length, 1.78 metres in width and 1.48-metres in height. Boot space is 510 litres, while the wheelbase is 2.65 metres, which means it should accommodate five passengers without a fuss.

The new Tipo is said to emphasise value for money and practicality, will be sold as part of an easy to understand model range and pricing structure and is a member of what Fiat calls the ‘Functional Family’.

The Fiat Tipo will have a choice of four engines – all said to be ‘reliable, muscular and efficient’ – including two MultiJet II turbo-diesels and two petrol units ranging from 90 to 120hp. Manual and automatic transmissions will be offered.

Meanwhile Fiat’s Uconnect infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity, TomTom navigation and a rear parking camera have been listed as extras.

A UK launch for the saloon is yet to be confirmed, so this may not ever make it to our shores, but reports say we will get the estate and hatchback from December 2015. We’ll let you know more when we hear it.
