Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid undercuts the Toyota Prius

Hyundai has announced a UK price and full specifications for the Ioniq, which is the world’s first car to come with a choice of three electrified powertrains.

The Hyunda Ioniq will be available in all-electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid flavours when it goes on sale from the 13th of October 2016, priced £3,000 less than its Toyota Prius rival.

In hybrid form, a 1.6-litre petrol works with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery to create 141PS and 125lb/ft of torque. CO2 emissions come in at 79g/km and fuel economy is said to be 83.1mpg combined.

The plug-in hybrid version, meanwhile, uses a 1.6-litre petrol engine to recharge the battery when it starts to run out of juice and will be available in 2017. It offers a 31-mile electric-only range.

Last but not least is the electric Ioniq, which ditches the 1.56kWh battery in its hybrid siblings in favour of a much larger 28kWh capacity, which is said to offer a 174-mile range and can be recharged by 80 per cent in 33 minutes using a 50kW rapid charger.

The entry-level Hyundai Hybrid SE 1.6 GDi starts from £19,995 and comes with 15-inch alloy wheels, DAB digital radio with Bluetooth, cruise control, rear parking sensors with rear view camera and autonomous emergency braking as standard.

Those who want the even more eco-friendly Hyundai Ioniq Electric will pay from £28,995 and for that you get the Premium specification comprised 16-inch alloys, LED headlamps, automatic windscreen wipers, Advanced Smart Cruise Control and navigation as standard.

Spend £30,795 on the Electric Premium SE and you can expect heated and ventilated front seats, heated leather steering wheel, Blind Spot Detection, front parking sensors, unique alloy wheels and leather seats.

All Ioniq models come with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty. Hyundai said it will release full pricing and specifications for the Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid model prior to its 2017 on sale date.

Hyundai UK president and CEO Tony Whitehorn said: “The All-New Hyundai IONIQ is the world’s first car offering three electrified powertrains and it will make low- to zero-emission mobility more accessible to more people.”
