The new Mazda 2 has been revealed. The latest version of the popular supermini will go on sale in Japan in the autumn and then the UK in early 2015, bringing with it what the Japanese manufacturer claims will be a potent mix of performance, value for money and efficiency.
Two engines will be available for UK buyers, a Skyactiv-D 1.5 diesel and a Skyactiv-G 1.5 petrol. Mazda admitted emissions won’t be class-leading, but will provide a nice balance between CO2 and performance.
A noticeable change is the new exterior design, which bears more than a whiff of its bigger brother, the Mazda 3 hatchback. A meaty front grille with a pointed edge and sleek headlights give the car a much-needed jab of excitement.
The interior is a much nicer place to spend time in. There’s Mazda’s MZD Connect infotainment system and rotary wheel for controlling most car functions as well as a stylish, clean cockpit design.
2.4 million Mazda 2s (also known as the Demio in certain markets) have sold since the model was introduced in 1996.
A price for the new model is yet to be confirmed. Stay tuned for full UK specs and a price as we head towards 2015.
