Mercedes-Benz and Gran Turismo come together to make one tasty sports car

To mark the 15th birthday of the racing game Gran Turismo, Mercedes-Benz designers have developed a pretty meaty sports car concept: the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo.

The car’s name is as much a mouthful as its design is a feast for the eyes. The guys at Mercedes Benz reckon “the design of this concept car reflects to extreme effect the perfect symbiosis between emotional, sensuous contours and intelligently presented high tech.” In English, that means it’s rather nice to look at from all angles. The angular headlamps, bulging haunches and phallic front end contribute a design that is eyecatching to say the least.

The AMG Vision Gran Turismo’s shape is similar to the 300 SL racing car of 1952. Instead of classic louvres, however, the grille on the concept car is kitted out with dozens of LEDs — a further development, Mercedes says, of the diamond grille introduced with the new A-Class.

The central display, if you want to be poetic about it, “takes the form of a glass surface floating directly above the racing steering wheel with its shift paddles”. Basically, its positioned directly in front of the driver and shows all the relevant information such as vehicl speed, engine speed, and engine operating temperature.

What about the performance you ask? Well under that long bonnet lies an AMG V8 biturbo engine that develops 585hp and a maximum torque of 800Nm, so it’s every inch the sports car. Now, if only it were real.

What are your thoughts? Have a sneak peek at the pictures, and then let us know by posting in the comments below.
