Mercedes bolsters S-Class range with three new engines

One new hybrid and two new bonkers V12s take the UK S-Class range to eleven models.

Just in case the only thing holding you back from buying an S-Class was the right engine, Mercedes has bolstered the UK range by adding an additional three choices. All will be available from April 2014. Just prepare to dig deep.

First up is the S 300 BlueTEC Hybrid L AMG Line. This engine is special in that it happens to be a diesel hybrid, making it part of a small club that includes the Range Rover Hybrid and the Citroen DS5 Hybrid4. A 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel and a 27bhp electric motor provide fuel economy of 61.4mpg and 120g/km of CO2 emissions.

The other two new V12 engines focus on performance and lots of it. The S600 L AMG Line ups offers 13bhp more than the previous S600, taking the total to 530bhp. Factor in 830Nm of torque and you can see why 0 to 62mph takes a mere 4.6 seconds. Emissions have been reduced by 21 per cent to 259g/km and fuel economy has been improved by 27 per cent to 25.5mpg.

The Mercedes S 65 AMG L V12 tops the range, with an impressive 630bhp and an even more impressive 1,000Nm. 0 to 62mph takes 4.3 seconds – a tenth of a second faster than its predecessor – yet somehow CO2 emissions have been reduced by 16 per cent to 279g/km and fuel efficiency is 20 per cent better at 23.7mpg.

Mercedes also took the time to announce new standard equipment across the entire S-Class range, including a touchpad system for controlling the infotainment system. A head-up display that projects your speed and other information such as navigation directions and a heated windscreen are now optional features.

Both of the new V12 models offer oodles of luxury as standard, including the rear seat reclining package, rear seat entertainment, exclusive nappa leather, Burmester 3D surround sound system and Mercedes’ Keyless-Go, which includes remote boot closing and hands-free opening. There’s also active blind spot assist and steer assist.

Did we mention Night view, TV tuner and a garage door opener are also among the standard extras? Really, it’s only the rear individual seat package (£2,900) and the refrigerator (£1,130) you need to pay extra for.

Obviously more power, improved efficiency and a lengthy equipment list comes at a premium. The S300 BlueTEC Hybrid, S 600 L AMG Line and S 65 AMG L start from £72,260, £139,960 and £176,960, respectively.
