The Civic Type R is some way off making its triumphant return, but that hasn’t stopped Honda from teasing us with a few morsels of information and a few snaps of the car lapping the Nurburgring in Germany.
Under the bonnet of the new Civic Type R will be 2-litre direct injection petrol engine that, according to Honda, will deliver at least 280PS (276bhp). That’s a hefty step-up from the 198bhp you got in the last Type R.
Honda is already working hard on ensuring it handles well, too. “We have recently spent a week at the Nurburgring, carrying out extensive testing and we are on target, and have already set a time approaching the lap record,” Honda president Manabu Nishimae told attendees of the Frankfurt motor show.
A quick look at the Civic Type R images reveals the love or hate triangle exhausts have been ditched in favour of a beefier, more traditional dual-exit, dual-pipe formation.
The Civic Type R is expected to go on sale in 2015.
Honda Civic Tourer
Honda has also revealed new information about the forthcoming Civic Tourer. Predictably, it’ll offer “class-leading boot space”, but it’ll be pretty frugal, too, thanks to a 1.6 i-DTEC engine, which is capable of an impressive 74.3mpg with CO2 emissions of 99g/km.
The car goes on sale in early 2014.
“For me, the strength of the car is the synergy of functionality, versatility, and dynamic design,” Civic Tourer project leader Adrian Killham said. “As a European development team, we’re passionate and proud about what we’ve achieved.”
Expect more details of both cars to trickle down as we head into 2014.
