Recombu Awards 2014: The car shortlists

The Recombu staff are looking unusually smart. Why? Because it’s the 2014 Recombu Awards, which are happening tonight at a swanky venue in Mayfair, London. Here are the cars up for a taste of automotive glory.

Recombu Cars will be handing out three trophies to celebrate the very best in cars this year. Without further ado, here are the nominees and categories that are in with a chance of taking home silverware.

Best Family Car 2014

Ford Focus Tesla Model S Seat Leon

VW Golf VW Golf SV Citroen Cactus

BMW i3 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer Mazda3

Nissan Qashqai Ford B-Max Kia Soul

Mercedes C-Class BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe

A total of 14 cars are up for the Recombu 2014 Best Family Car Award – and choosing between them was a mighty task. The fact is, 2014 has seen some truly excellent cars that take family life in their stride, ranging from the quirky Citroen Cactus to the all-electric Tesla Model S.

There can only be one winner, though. Can the newcomers topple the more established models like the Ford Focus and VW Golf?

Best Luxury Car 2014

 Porsche Panamera S Mercedes-Benz S-Class Rolls-Royce Wraith

Range Rover Jaguar XJ BMW M6 Gran Coupe

 Audi A8

A luxury car is where it’s at if you want to cruise in comfort and style. The Recombu Cars shortlist has a predictable array of veterans in the segment, including Range Rover, Audi A8 and Jaguar XJ. The question is which nominee stands tallest in a tough crowd?

Best Performance Car 2014

BMW M4 Coupe BMW M3 Saloon BMW i8

VW Golf R Tesla Model S Jaguar F-Type R Coupe

 BMW M235i Porsche 911 GT3 McLaren 650S

Lamborghini Huracan Maserati Ghibli Ferrari F12 Berlinetta

 Alfa Romeo 4C

Many petrolheads want or dream of something absurdly fast, the sort of car that makes you smile time and time again with its handling, pace and looks. It is, therefore, only fair we choose a car that gets to take home our Best Performance Car 2014 award.

The category is a mixed bag in terms of price. A VW Golf R offers serious pace for very little money compared with a Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. The Alfa 4C, meanwhile, only cares about going fast, while the BMW i8 wants to prove hybrids can be desirable. Which is best? Stick around to find out.

The winners will be anounced on Friday 7th November 2014.
