Renault has announced the Megane GT 220, a sporty version of the standard Megane that offers an affordable way into the world of French performance motoring.
The Renault Megane GT 220 is available as a Hatch, Coupe or Sport Tourer, all of which are powered by the same Renaultsport 2.0-litre 220hp petrol engine capable of an impressive 340Nm of torque, 0 to 62mph in 7.6 seconds and a top speed of 149mph.
Speedy enough, then, for most people but also relatively frugal if the claimed fuel efficiency figure of 38.7mpg is accurate, thanks to stop and start as standard. Meanwhile CO2 emissions are 169g/km.
A six-speed manual gearbox compliments other sporty extras such as a Renaultsport chassis, 18-inch ‘Serdad’ alloy wheels, 320mm ventilated discs at the front and various driver systems including Anti-Skid Regulation and ABS.
Renault has given the Megane GT 220 a slightly sportier look than the GT Line TomTom model it is based on. It has a special GT front bumper with reshaped central air intake and a gloss black bar across it, while the rear bumper features a body-coloured diffuser.
The interior is more petrolhead friendly, too, owing to sports seats, a thick leather-rimmed steering wheel, aluminium pedals and a polished carbon effect finish for the interior door handle pulls, dashboard and air vent surrounds.
Renault has been generous with the standard spec list comprised dual-zone climate control, cruise control, LED daytime running lights, R-Link satnav, automatic headlights and wipers, rear parking camera, an uprated Arkamys sound system and Bluetooth and USB connectivity.
Rounding off the package is Renault’s 4+ package, which offers four years or 100,000 miles of warranty – the first two years comprised unlimited mileage.
The Renault Megane GT 220 hatchback is the cheapest of the three models, starting from £23,245. The Sport Tourer and Coupe start from £24,230 and £24,245, respectively. All models are on sale now.
