The smart has probably spawned the greatest number of concept cars in all of eternity – come Geneva, Paris, Frankfurt, or any other Motor Show for that matter, you’ll find a new version of Daimler’s evergreen city car, each more bonkers than the next.

The latest to emerge is the stripped down smart fourjoy, destined to be unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. And by stripped down we mean exactly that – it doesn’t have any doors, lacks a rear window and doesn’t even have a roof.
This approach, smart says, has several benefits. Firstly, it’s allowed them to fit a bench seat in the rear quarters, giving the smart fourjoy room for four passengers – hence the name. It also allows Joe Public an unhindered view of the car’s futuristic interior – just don’t ask what you’re supposed to do when it rains.
The fourjoy’s most bizarre feature by far is the fact it comes with a pair of electric skateboards – or longboards to be precise. A pair of these can be fastened onto the roof of the car, with helmets stowed in dedicated compartments inside the boot. Smart’s even fitted a high-definition camera to the rear to film your longboarding antics.
The fourjoy’s most bizarre feature by far is the fact it comes with a pair of electric longboards. As with nearly all concept cars, particularly of this type, power comes from electricity rather than petrol. In this case it’s a 55kW magneto-electric motor hooked up to a 17.6kWh battery pack that should take around seven hours to charge and offer a driving range on par with most modern electric vehicles.
The smart fourjoy will go on show at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show later this month.
