Sundae drivers: Drivers stuck in M56 jam queue for ice cream

Motorists left hot and bothered after being stuck in a traffic jam decided to get out of their vehicles – to queue for an ice cream.

The video sourced by the Manchester Evening News shows drivers waiting patiently for a taste of Mister Softie while surrounded by vehicles that were stationary on the M56 motorway over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Police shut down all lanes around the Manchester Airport area to bring in negotiators tasked with talking down a man who threatened to jump off a bridge on Sunday around 6:30pm.

It took two hours to get the man to come down from the bridge and that he did so of his own accord. He was then taken to hospital by ambulance for ‘ongoing care and support’ at around 9pm, according to North West Motorway Police.

Waiting for an ice cream was just one of the activities undertaken by bored motorists who had been advised to stay in their vehicles by police. One lady was seen walking her dog, while families worried about missing their flight scaled a roadside fence to make their own way to the airport.

The M56 came to a standstill only a month ago after a man was knocked out in a fight in the middle of the motorway. Police said alcohol was a factor in the incident, which lead to the road’s closure around Wythenshawe junction.
