Vauxhall Adam S packs a 148bhp punch

Tasty performance version of the Vauxhall Adam to debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

A brand new Vauxhall Adam will be unveiled to the world at the Geneva Motor Show. The top-of-the-range Vauxhall Adam S, which Vauxhall says is close to production, looks to offer oodles of performance in a compact, sporty-looking package.

Up front is an ‘exclusively developed’ 1.4-litre Turbo Ecotec engine derived from the standard Adam’s four-cylinder lump. It generates a 150PS (148bhp) and 220Nm (162lb/ft) of torque ─ a 50 and 70 per cent increase in horsepower and torque, respectively, over the non-turbocharged Adam.

The engine benefits from a turbocharger integrated within the exhaust manifold and dual cam phasing for continuously variable valve timing as well as weight saving in the form of a plastic intake manifold and hollow-cast camshafts.

Performance is likely to be spritely given the Adam’s low kerb weight, although with no acceleration figures to go on we can only guess the 0 to 62mph time. We do know, however, the top speed is 137mph and that gear changes are taken care of by a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Stop/Start technology, 18-inch alloy wheels and VXR performance brakes with 16-inch front and 15-inch rear discs and red calipers come as standard, while a specifically-tuned chassis is said to offer ‘direct, sharp performance steering’.

The Vauxhall Adam S stands apart from its standard sibling with a red paintjob and anthracite grey roof, which leads to a special rear spoiler. There are also little carbon fibre-esque touches such as on the door mirror caps and an extended rear bumper that sits above a new exhaust tailpipe.

Inside the cockpit are Recaro Performance seats, red leather on the gear knob, handbrake and steering wheel and red and white detailing on the instrument cluster and door panels.

Mod-cons come in the form of LED daytime running lights, tinted rear windows, electronic climate control, seven speaker sound system and Vauxhall IntelliLink for linking your Android or iOS smartphone to the car’s infotainment system, which features a 7-inch HD touchscreen display and USB connectivity.

No word on a price or release date. Expect to hear more once the Geneva Motor Show is underway from March 4th. In the meantime, you could always check out the rugged Vauxhall Adam Rocks crossover.
