Vauxhall Insignia VXR SuperSport is the fastest thing you can buy for £30,000

We’ve a new contender for our top 10 fastest family cars list. Meet the Vauxhall Insignia VXR SuperSport Sports Tourer – a high-performance wagon whose 170mph top speed and £30,000 price tag make it the fastest car you can buy for for that sort of money – according to Vauxhall, anyway.

The latest version, set to be unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, benefits from updated looks and chassis tweaks that have also been applied across the rest of the Insignia range. We can’t say we’re massive fans of the extensively re-styled front and rear, unfortunately. It has all the requisite elements in place – chrome, big vents, a purposeful stance – but it lacks the athleticism and menace of something like an Audi RS4.

There’s no doubting its performance credentials. Power comes from a 2.8-litre V6 turbo engine matched with a six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel-drive, helping it hit 60mph from a standstill in 6.1 seconds. The hatchback version manages the same sprint in a mere 5.9 seconds.

Corner handling should be fairly decent thanks to an electronic limited-slip differential that constantly adapts to prevailing road conditions. The software for its adaptive damper system has been upgraded and its ESP software modified for ‘even more precise handling and control of understeer’.

Inside, the Insignia VXR SuperSport range packs a new instrument panel and centre console design, with an infotainment system that includes an 8-inch touchscreen, 3D navigation, voice control, DAB and Bluetooth-operated Internet connectivity.

You can buy the Insignia VXR SuperSport range now. The Hatchback costs £29,749 while the Sports Tourer will set you back £31,049.
