Tesco’s Blinkbox Books opens up ebook battle with Amazon

Tesco’s Blinkbox film and music services have been extended into ebooks with a new service to rival Amazon.

Blinkbox Books will offer customers hundreds of thousands of ebooks from best-selling authors including James Patterson, chick-lit churner Jenny Colgan and airport brain-number Jeffrey Archer.

Purchases over £1 will also earn Tesco Clubcard points, and customers can also try books before they buy, by downloading free samples straight to their smartphone or tablet.

Blinkbox Books managing director, Gavin Sathianathan, said: “Customers want to enjoy entertainment where, when and how it suits them. With Blinkbox Books we have sought to reflect and meet changing consumer demands, offering the latest books on the most popular devices.”

“This is just the beginning. We passionately believe that the story doesn’t end when the book does and so we have plans to evolve the service in the coming months to further deepen customers’ connection to authors and help them discover the next story they will fall in love with.”

Blinkbox Books is available online or via free apps for Android and iOS, alongside Tesco’s pay-per-view video service, Blinkbox, and the streaming music provider, Blinkbox Music.

Michael Comish, Tesco’s group digital officer and co-founder of Blinkbox, said: “We now have three digital entertainment services under the blinkbox brand name spanning movies and TV, music and books.

“The significant investment in these services further demonstrates our commitment to meeting customer demand for entertainment on their terms in today’s digital, connected world.”
