British Gas’s Hive smart heating control system is now available through high street and online retailers including the Apple Store.
The move puts Hive into direct competition with the Google-backed Nest smart energy controller in Apple’s shops, where Hive could previously only be bought direct via www.hivehome.com or British Gas.
British Gas is looking to take Hive mainstream with a series of deals with high street retailers, as the UK’s energy market heats up with more than a dozen rival services, some much smarter than Hive.

“We wanted to develop a simple and smart mobile product that would put control of homes back in people’s hands, quite literally. Hive lets you control your heating and hot water from your mobile, tablet, or laptop.
“For Hive to be available in iconic high street stores is hugely exciting, and means we’re making this control even more accessible.”
Hive recently added a new feature called Geolocation, which allows users to receive a reminder about their heating status when they’re away from home.
The feature alerts users when they have gone out and left the heating on. It will also alert users when they are coming home and the temperature of their house is lower than they would like.
The technology is in use in over 75,000 homes in the UK and British Gas claims Hive can save users up to £150 per year. The system costs £199, including the Hive kit and installation by a British Gas engineer.
