BT has announced a new download to own movies feature for BT TV customers with a YouView box.
Titles will be able to buy in both SD and HD from BT Box Office with prices starting from £5.99 and £8.99 respectively. Movies will begin streaming as soon as you’ve bought them and you’ll be able to rewatch titles for as often as you like.
Movie titles available to download now include The Social Network, Black Swan and Jerry Maguire.
From February 10, The Croods, Elysium and Captain Phillips will become available while The Wolverine, DreamWorks Animation’s Turbo will follow from February 17.
So far BT has only signed deals with 20th Century Fox and Sony. A BT spokesperson told Recombu that BT hopes to offer titles from all of the major film studios and expand its 600-strong movie library.
Alex Green, director of BT TV, added: “We are delighted to have reached this agreement with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
“The new service gives you even more choice. You can buy the latest blockbusters and they’re yours to keep forever.”
As well as letting viewers stream movies in the living room, BT mentioned plans to launch a mobile service which would let subscribers watch purchased titles on other devices. BT Sport TV subscribers can watch the action live online or on a phone or tablet through a separate app. No further details of a BT Box Office app were available at the time of writing.
BT also revealed that if a customer chose to leave the service, they would be sent DVD copies of any purchases in the post. Customers who buy HD titles however will not be sent Blu-ray copies, which could be a dealbreaker for those who want the guarantee of a physical back up.
