BT has launched two new broadband and calls deals aimed specifically at university students.
As students in their second year and beyond typically only rent a house from October to June, BT has made Unlimited Broadband and Unlimited Infinity available on nine months contracts.
Unlimited Broadband costs £16/month and is an ADSL2+/copper-based service providing speeds of up to 24Mbps. Unlimited Infinity uses FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) which gives subscribers top download speeds of 38Mbps and costs £20/month.
Both of these bundle deals come with Unlimited Weekend Calls to 01, 02 and 03 UK landlines as well as 0845 and 0870 numbers.
You get the new BT Home Hub 4 wireless router included which promises a stronger signal than the previous Hub 3 and faster speeds in the home. Though the Hub 4 itself is free there’s a on-off £6.95 delivery charge.
Students taking out the faster fibre-based Infinity package will also need to pay a one-off £30 connection fee. Line rental is charged at £15.45/month on both packages.
This is the first time BT has launched a broadband deal aimed at students. Previously, Virgin Media’s nine months student deal was proving popular, although figures suggested that this contributed to seasonal churn when students left town for the holidays.
Pete Oliver, Commercial director, BT Consumer, couldn’t resist having a dig at Virgin Media saying: “We think these new BT Infinity and BT Broadband nine month packages will be really popular with students. No usage caps and no download limits and we won’t slow you down – unlike Virgin Media. You can download, stream and game as much as you like and there won’t be any unexpected charges at the end of the month.”
Virgin Media do indeed have traffic shaping on their network, but if you look at the terms and conditions, even if your speed is capped you’re likely to still have a faster speed than you would on an equivalent BT package.
As well as offering students a flexible shorted contract, every order placed will see student homes entered into a prize draw. Winners will receive the entire subscription free along with a ridiculously impressive haul of goodies. The full prize includes: Samsung PS43F4500 43-inch Plasma TV, a Samsung HT-F4500 BluRay Theatre System 5.1, an Xbox 360 S Console 250GB HDD, a Nikon Coolpix S9050 Digital Camera (compact, 12.1 Mpx, 15.5x optical zoom), four Apple iPod Shuffles (4th Generation September 2012, 2Gb, Silver) and a £300.00 Sainsbury’s voucher.
There are five prize packages in total. BT’s student broadband packages will be on offer until the end of October.
