BT Sport streaming app coming to iOS and Android

The BT Sport app will work on both iOS and Android when the new BT Sports channels launch later this year.

The app, designed to let fans catch up with live sports on the go, will let you stream on phones and tablets as well as desktop systems and was announced by BT yesterday.

Though details are thin on the ground right now, there wasn’t any indication that customers with Android phones and tablets will get a look in. When the BT Sport app was announced, a press render showed the app working on an iPad, implicitly confirming iOS support.

There were no such clues to suggest that an Android app was in the pipeline but BT sources have now confirmed to us that BT Sport apps for both mobile platforms are in the works.

BT Sport will be available to anyone with a BT Broadband service. Live content can be accessed either via BT Vision (if you’ve got basic ADSL BT Broadband), BT YouView (if you’ve got fibre-based BT Infinity) Sky TV or through the BT Sport app, available on desktops and mobiles.

We’re still waiting to hear back about other things like the minimum download speeds required for it to work in the home, whether it the desktop player uses HTML5 or Flash and other minimum specs. It’s expected that Windows 7 and 8 as well as recent versions of Mac OS X will be supported but we’ll update when we have official confirmation.
