Channel 4 has launched a new 4oD app for Sony’s PlayStation 3.
Designed specifically for the games console, the new-look 4oD app replaces the old service, which was essentially a redesign of the 4oD site optimised for the PS3’s web browser.
The new 4oD user interface for PS3 promises to be more intuitive, more reliable and easier to use when watching programmes. From the screenshots below we can see how specific functions have been mapped to buttons on the controller and how a grid layout, more akin to the Xbox 360 app, has been adopted.
Read Recombu Digital’s guide to 4oDCollections of archived Channel 4 content such as The IT Crowd and Nathan Barley are available to view alongside catch-up content from Channel 4 programmes from the last 30 days. PS3 owners can search for content by genre, alphabetically or use the search box for specific titles.
The new 4oD app for PlayStation 3 is out now. 4oD is also available on Sky, Virgin Media, BT Vision, YouView, YouTube, iOS and Android phones and tablets, Xbox 360 and selected Samsung Smart TVs. Freesat from Freetime will also join the 4oD family at some point this year.

Channel 4 is currently giving 4oD an overhaul, preparing to make the service more personalised and relevent to its members. While 4oD is a free, ad-supported service, you’ll need to register with Channel 4 first if you want to stream programmes.
As well as revamping 4oD, Channel 4 is also preparing to launch 4Now, an iPad app that lets you access live TV information and join in with Twitter conversations and competitions through a single slick interface.
