Channel 5 is to launch a new repeats service in January called Channel 5 Later.
The channel will carry repeats of its most popular and talked about shows, in a similar style to Channel 4’s 4Seven.
The service will launch in January on Freeview, Sky and Freesat. It will feature a range of its most popular shows that have been already shown on Channel 5. A placeholder has recently appeared on Freeview channel 55.
Among the shows likely to appear on the new channel are Celebrity Big Brother and The Hotel Inspector, according to Broadcast magazine. The channel is also likely to feature shows from Channel 5’s popular children’s strand Milkshake.
The channel launch expands the portfolio of the broadcaster, which includes 5* and 5USA.
While there is a Channel 5 +1, the new Channel 5 Later is thought to be part of a bid to increase the broadcaster’s viewing share, which will make it more appealing to advertisers.
C5 chief operating officer Paul Dunthorne told Broadcast: “Our ambition is to give our viewers as many chances as possible to view our programmes – whether via devices or a new channel like 5 Later. The new channel means we can offer an ever stronger Channel 5 service to our viewers.”
In late September, the placeholder channel started running promos between 2:15am and 2:30am.
