Chromecast-style YouTube update comes to all Roku devices

All Roku owners can now add YouTube apps to their choice of streaming and home media content, and throw videos from their phone to their TV.

The YouTube app is now available on all its current generation devices in the UK, US, Canada and Ireland, following its introduction to the Roku 3 in December last year.

This includes Roku LT, Roku 1, Roku 2, Roku 2 HD, Roku 2 XD, Roku 2XS, Roku 3, the Roku Streaming Stick (both HDMI and Roku Ready versions), and the Roku HD model 2500, although it won’t be on pre-2011 models.

“From viral hits to music videos to educational videos, we’re excited to be able to bring the YouTube channel on Roku to more customers,” the company’s vice president of content acquisition, Ed Lee, blogged.

“We appreciate your patience and know you’ll enjoy watching the best of the Web on your big screen.”

The YouTube Roku app can be downloaded by heading to the Roku Channel Store, and will allow also viewers to send videos from their YouTube app on Android devices, iPhone and iPad to any Roku on the same wireless network.

The throw-to-Roku feature is similar to Google’s Chromecast, and even uses the TV icon familiar to Chromecast owners. Follow the link to see how the Roku 3 lines up against Chromecast
