Kirklees, West Yorkshire ready for 1,000Mbps fibre

Kirklees in West Yorkshire is set to become one of Britain’s most advanced digitally connected areas.

Installation of the Kirklees CORE network has built up a head of steam and is now moving forward apace. CityFibre has confirmed that 20 per cent of the 72km pure fibre network has now been deployed.

The network is being rolled out to offer businesses in Huddersfield, Batley and Dewsbury the opportunity to order fibre to the premises (FTTP) broadband, which will allow download and upload speeds of 1,000Mbps. The service is expected to go live in September.

The first service provider to offer services over the CORE network will be Abzorb, but a number of other partners are expected to sign on with CityFibre in the coming months to begin peddling their wares off the back of the newly minted gigabit network.

As with its rollouts in other areas, CityFibre will use public demand to guide the deployment of services. Businesses which register an interest in the network aren’t obliged to take up service but a number of enthusiastic parties in an area will signal to CityFibre that it’s worth moving the installation through a particular area – so if your business is based in West Yorks you should get your name down now and the service may very well end up on your doorstep.

Jacqui Gedman, Director of Economy, Environment and Skills at Kirklees Council said: “We have established and growing technology and media businesses in the region, who obviously rely on fast, reliable connectivity. But it is also vital to the growth of our manufacturing businesses and other sectors as they need the competitive advantage greater speeds and bandwidth can provide. This is a great opportunity for all businesses to take advantage of this new technology.”

Her effusiveness was echoed by CityFibre’s regional development manager for Kirklees, Jason Petrou-Brown, who said:

“We are delighted that construction work has begun, and our carefully planned roll-out will start to bring gigabit connectivity to business from September this year. It’s great to have Abzorb, a Yorkshire based service provider with over 20 years’ experience serving local and national businesses, on board and offering services today.

“We urge businesses to register their interest on the Kirklees CORE website, to take advantage of this opportunity to increase their productivity and profitability.”
