Public WiFi operator The Cloud will launch free WiFi hotspots in 24 shopping centres around the UK.
Shopping centre owner Land Securities has invited The Cloud to connect its malls after starting trials at London’s One New Change and Bristol’s Cabot Circus locations in late 2011.
The hotspots will serve up to 300 million people a year as they shop and eat at the 22 shopping centres and two outlet malls.
Richard Akers of Land Securities said: “The retailers in our shopping centres know the value of having WiFi in their venues – they recognise that people expect to be able to browse the web wherever they are and get a first-class connectivity experience.
“This roll-out is part of our vision for ensuring that all our shopping centres embrace the digital expectations of visitors. The success of The Cloud’s WiFi roll-out in the first two sites convinced us of the need to rapidly expand the service to the rest of our estate.”
The Cloud – owned by Sky – has thousands of WiFi locations at locations such as the City of London, JD Wetherspoons, Pizza Express, Pret A Manger, Caffe Nero, and Eat.
Vince Russell, managing director of The Cloud, said: “This ground breaking partnership with Land Securities will allow The Cloud to use its long standing WiFi expertise to deliver a high quality service to millions of shoppers allowing them enhance the retail experience with fast, reliable access to the rapidly emerging multichannel marketplace.”
