Freesat adds Manhattan to next-gen box brands

FreesatBritish set-top box maker Manhattan has been added to the line-up of manufacturers for Freesat’s ‘G2’ advanced receivers.

In September last year, Freesat confirmed that Sagemcom and Humax would also be
producing the new boxes in ‘early 2012’.

Freesat G2 will be the first major upgrade to the specification for Freesat products since it launched in 2008.
The details are closely-guarded, but Recombu Digital understands the focus is on advanced support for combining satellite TV with on-demand services delivered over your broadband connection.

Freesat was the first subscription-free TV service to offer catch-up TV via the BBC iPlayer and ITV Player, with 4oD understood to be under development.

G2 products will be exclusively HD receivers and TVs, and are also expected to support advanced features such as streaming via home networks to PCs and mobile devices, and access to media files on home storage.
