Freeview is the main TV choice for more than 11 million British homes – confirming it’s the most popular TV service and second-favourite HD service.
The news sets Freeview 700,000-homes ahead of Sky as the main TV choice, and gives it an unassailable 76 per cent of homes as the main or second-set for TV.
Ilse Howling, managing director of Freeview, said: “The last 12 months have been a landmark year for Freeview. For the first time, the whole of the UK was able to receive Freeview and Freeview HD following the completion of digital switchover.
Freeview’s figures are based on the private BARD Establishment Survey, so we can’t examine them in detail, but also claim 3.5m homes have Freeview HD on their main set.
That’s more than a million behind Sky HD, but the three-year-old Freeview HD service is said to selling strongly, with sales in January 2013 a quarter higher than a year earlier, and a total of 7.6m HD TVs and boxes sold since it launched.
