A Freeview channel reshuffle in September will see the Childrens and News channels moving down the programe guide.
The channel move comes as Digital UK, the organisation charged with the task of management of the Freeview programme guide (EPG), prepares to make way for future channels.
From September 3 onwards, the children’s genre which normally begins at channel number 70 will move down to channel 120. The news genre will move from channel 80 down to channel 130.
Viewers may need to retune Freeview TVs and digital boxes, unless their hardware does this automatically. On-screen messages should prompt viewers to retune on or after September 3. The channel moves will occur after a series of major sporting events this year such as the Commonwealth Games, the World Cup and Wimbledon have been broadcast, so as to minimise disruption.
Viewers who don’t retune will not lose channels – services will remain accessible at their old numbers. However, Digital UK and Freeview recommend viewers retune from time-to-time to ensure they have access to all available services in their area.
Freeview has announced plans to launch 10 new HD channels using airwaves cleared by the Digtial Switchover. It’s expected that HD channels will be based in a separate HD genre section, which would begin at channel 101 on the Freeview guide.
These channels would also arrive on YouView, a service which blends digital terrestrial TV with extra channels and on-demand content delivered via a broadband connection.
