How to watch Premier League football 2016/2017: Online, TV, mobile and more

Another year, another awesome and perhaps unpredictable season of Premier League football. The first televised game of the 2015/2016 season sees reigning champions Leicester take on Hull on August 13, and there are plenty of ways to watch, with Premier League matches once again split between Sky Sports and BT Sport. Between them, Sky and BT have paid a hefty combined £5.1 billion for the Premier League rights until 2019, but subscribers to Virgin Media and other TV services can also enjoy all of the hot footy action.

This year also sees Premier League games aired in Ultra HD 4K resolution, thanks to the new Sky Q Ultra HD service. That adds to the 4K offerings already being aired by BT Sport. Check out our guide on how to watch 2016/2017 football matches in 4K UHD.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy the beautiful game now, from nearly anywhere. Watching via TV, laptop, tablet or smartphone – it’s all possible now thanks to multiple broadcasters getting in on the action.

How to watch Premier League 2016/2017 matches: Sky and Now TV

From 13 August Sky will be airing 124 live Premier League football matches via its Sky Q Silver service. That means plenty of Ultra High definition football broadcast live at 50 frames per second. Matches will run from Friday Night Football, across the weekend and into the night on Monday Night Football. They will also be available on Sky Sports for lower resolution subscriptions.

For those that don’t have or want a Sky subscription, there is also the option of Now TV which is an internet connected box that allows streaming of Sky channels. The Sky Sports package can be bolted on for a set charge, like a month only, without any commitment to keep paying longer. This won’t manage 4K though, as it tops out at 1080 Full HD quality.

The Sky Sports package is £27.50 per month for subscribers. Now TV is £6.99 for a Sky Sport Day Pass, £10.99 for a Week Pass or £33.99 for a Month Pass. For UHD 4K you’ll need to subscribe to the Sky Q Silver package.

Non-Sports subscribers can also check out some football at no extra cost on the new Sky Sports Mix channel.

Watch online with Sky Go and Now TV

Sky subscribers are automatically granted access to the Sky Go app. This allows them to stream live football matches via the app on smartphones, mobiles and laptops. This is iOS, Android and Kindle Fire device friendly.

Now TV users can access the service via – deep breath – Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, YouView, Roku, EE TV, Apple TV, LG Smart TV, Google Chromecast, Kindle Fire HD and Blu-ray players.

How to watch Premier League 2016/2017 matches: BT Sport

BT Sport will be airing a selection of Premier League games in 4K UHD this season. The company offers 42 games in 2016 largely accounting for the 5:30pm Saturday night games.

BT Sport also offers Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup, National League, SPFL, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, Brasileirao and A-League fixtures.

The Premier League games will run across its BT Sport channels and Ultra HD channel. BT Sport is £22 per month in standard definition and £27 per month for HD but will need an upgraded UHD box for 4K.

The BT Sport app is available on Android, iOS and Windows 10 devices for streaming of live and on demand content. BT Sport 1 can be watched live online as long as you have a BT Sport subscription as a BT ID toting customer.

How to watch Premier League 2016/2017 matches: Virgin Media

Virgin Media offers a selection of sports subscription channels in various packages allowing you to get all the Premier League games in one place. This tops out at HD though with no 4K offering yet.

BT Sport is included on the XL package at £39.50 per month. Sky Sports, which comes with channels 1 to 5 and News HQ, costs £31.75 per month or £38.75 in HD.

Watch online with Virgin TV Anywhere

Virgin Media subscribers with a TiVo box can access their BT Sport content via the Virgin TV Anywhere app.

How to watch Premier League 2016/2017 matches: BBC TV

The BBC shows plenty of football highlights from the Premier League, to satisfy footy fans without a paid subscription service. Match of the Day airs on Saturday night and Match of the Day 2 is shown on Sunday evening, each showing highlights from that day’s games.

BBC iPlayer offers Match of the Day. But you’ll have to wait a little while after the live broadcast has finished with weekend editions arriving on Tuesday morning. Midweek versions are on the iPlayer from midnight the day after it’s broadcast.

Match of the Day can be downloaded for viewing offline on mobile or computer but these are time sensitive and will disappear when they have expired.

How to watch Premier League 2016/2017 matches: Radio coverage

The BBC 5 Live radio station, along with talkSPORT, offers live games over the radio – ideal for following the footy when driving. Also accessible online via the Tunein Radio and the BBC 5 Live website.

BBC 5 Live has 144 Premier League games including 3pm Saturday games, 4pm Sunday matches and some mid week football.

talkSPORT has live Premier League rights that mean it offers 28 late afternoon Saturday matches, 28 sunday mornings games and a few 3pm Saturday fixtures on talkSPORT 2.
