IFA 2014: Spotify Connect bringing music to Philips smart TVs

Spotify users will be able to stream their playlists on smart TVs thanks to an update to the Spotify Connect platform.

Spotify Connect lets you use your Spotify mobile app as a remote control and stream music on over 80 wireless speakers and home audio systems and now smart TVs are getting a look in too.

At the moment, only Philips smart TVs running Android are compatible but the music streaming service says that Spotify Connect will come to more smart TVs.

Spotify says that Philips smart TVs are just the first in a long line of TVs that will be supported. Sten Garmark, vice president of product at Spotify said: “This is just the beginning. Our goal is to put Connect devices into the home of every music fan on the planet.”

“Our mission with Connect was to give people a better way to listen at home, and we have delivered exactly that for music fans all over the world in just one year. We wanted to offer a broad range of devices, and our partners have delivered an incredible range of innovative multi room systems, receivers, radios and dongles for every budget.”

Spotify has also announced that Panasonic, Bose and Gramafon have signed up as media partners and that more will be announced at the IFA trade show in Berlin. A number of Samsung’s wireless speakers are compatible with Spotify Connect but Samsung smart TVs currently aren’t Connect-supported. With more announcements to come, this could change by the end of next week.
