ITV Essentials offers catch-up overseas

ITV has launched a new on-demand service that allows viewers to watch their favourite ITV shows, such as Coronation Street or Emmerdale when on holiday.

Dubbed ITV Essentials, the service entitles users when aborad to access and view all ITV shows broadcast by the company. ITV said it aims to make shows available the same day as broadcast with the aim of having Coronation Street and Emmerdale available at the same time as they’re being broadcast in the UK.

The service is available currently only on PC or Mac and also requires users to download and install Microsoft Silverlight to view content. A wireless connection when abroad is also necessary to stream content (the service doesn’t allow streaming over mobile data).

The broadcaster said that apps for iPhone and iPad will be available soon, which will allow users to download the app, sign up at home and access abroad.

Subscription to the service is priced at €5.49 (£4.59) per month whether you choose a monthly rolling contract (called Living Abroad) or a 30-day Holiday Pass. The broadcaster said that the service would be available in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, Gibraltar, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Spain.

ITV recommends that users of the service sign up for it in the UK before travelling abroad.

The service is separate from its ITV Player service, which allows free-to-view on-demand access to ITV shows. Its ITV Premium service allows users to watch ITV shows without the ads.
