Jersey Telecom nears completion of full fibre broadband network

Jersey Telecom has announced that its well on its way to rolling out 1Gbps fibre broadband to all residents by 2016.

The island-wide ISP has promised to connect everyone on Jersey to full FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) connections by 2016, providing services starting at 50Mbps going all the way up to 1Gbps.

The ‘Gigabit Isles’ initiative will see 35,000 premises across Jersey benefitting from gigabit fibre along with 5,000 customers on the neighbouring island of Guernsey. So far, a total of 5,000 premises have been passed in Jersey.

Read Recombu Digital’s guide to Jersey Telecom and Gigbit JerseyThe light might not yet be at the end of the tunnel, but Dave Newbold, gigabit program director for JT is keen to press on.

Speaking to ISP Review, Newbold said: “We are really pleased with progress this year, and I would like to take this opportunity to commend my team for their hard work. We are well on track to complete the project on time by the end of 2016.

Once completed Jersey will be one of very few places in the world with fibre broadband connected all the way to the homes of every customer; that network is being put in place so that the Island is ready for the projected escalation in the services and entertainment which Islanders will access over the internet.”

By 2016, many of the UK’s superfast broadband projects will be completed, but few if any of these will provide total coverage and the majority of locations will be connected to FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) lines, providing top speeds of 80Mbps.

That said, all of the JT Fibre packages come with some pretty restrictive monthly usage caps. The basic 50Mbps service costs £29.99/month and comes with an 80GB cap. The next level up is 100Mbps, which costs £44.99/month and gives you 100GB to play with.

The top tier 1Gbps service is priced at £59.99/month and again you get a 100GB monthly usage cap. All JT broadband packages benefit from unlimited overnight usage from midnight to 8:00AM, so you can save any heavy downloading until then.

While services elsewhere might not be as speedy, unlimited monthly usage means that customers are free to download files and use the web as they wish whenever they want.
