Digital Theatre is broadcasting the Opera North production of Don Giovanni to Samsung Smart TVs as well as to the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.
This marks Digital Theeatre’s first opera production. The opera was recorded at the Leeds Grand in October 2012. Viewers will be able to watch Mozart’s famous opera at the touch of a button through the Digital Theatre website, the company’s app for Samsung Smart TV or through the Digital Theatre iOS app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
Digital Theatre has worked with a number of UK theatre companies capture productions in HD from multiple camera angles. Opera North’s first new production of Don Giovanni for seven years won the Best Opera Award at the 2013 Manchester Theatre Awards.
Speaking about the launch of the partnership, Richard Mantle, General Director of Opera North said: “We are delighted to join in partnership with Digital Theatre who clearly share with us a real commitment to innovation and high quality. We hope this will be the first of many opportunities for Opera North’s work to be accessed online.”
He added: “Digital Theatre is a highly talented company and this new venture takes Opera North into new territory way beyond the bounds of the traditional theatre experience.”
Digital Theatre Co-Founder and Executive Producer Tom Shaw said his company had spent “over three years refining our method of capturing the performing arts working in spaces from a shipping container outside the Young Vic to the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.”
“It is an honour to partner with Opera North to capture the intimacy of their work and bring this award-winning production to a worldwide audience,” he said.
Over the coming months Digital Theatre will develop an opera catalogue both through the capture of productions and distribution of the best of the world’s opera content on its state of the art platforms.
