Roku updates its iPhone and Android app: What’s new in version 4.0 and how to update your Roku app

Roku has updated its Android and iPhone app to change up the design and add in some new functionality. Here’s why you should update your Roku mobile app today, and what changes you can expect to see.

Roku’s excellent TV streaming boxes such as the Roku 4 come bundled with a remote control, but inevitably the damn things end up lodged down the back of the sofa (or in the toilet, as we’ve discovered if you have a small child in the house). Which is why it’s a good idea to download the Roku app to your iPhone or Android device, so you always have an alternative means of control close to hand.

As well as giving you an easy way to control your Roku box, the mobile app offers plenty of other great features too. For instance, you can connect some earphones to your mobile device to listen privately to whatever you’re watching, which is particularly handy for late-night viewing.

The Roku mobile app has just been updated to version 4.0 and here’s what new features you can expect from this latest update, available from today.

Roku mobile app update: What’s new in version 4.0?

To start with, version 4.0 of the Roku app cleans up the overall design, for easier navigation. You now have a new toolbar at the bottom of the screen, which gives fast access to your installed channels, as well as the new What’s On feature (see below). You can also bring up the standard remote control layout, or send your photos and videos to your TV, to amaze your friends and family with a slideshow all about you.

That What’s On tab gives you Roku’s personal recommendations for new movies, shows and other bits that you can enjoy on your streaming box. Not the most exciting or original of features, sure, but it could be handy if you’re bereft of inspiration for what to watch next.

Finally, Roku’s on-screen remote control has been rejiggered for this new version of the app. Buttons are now closer together, making one-handed use easier, while the new channels icon in the top right corner gives you fast access to whatever you’ve installed.

Roku mobile app update: How do I get the update?

Roku has released this latest version of the mobile app today, so you can update right now and enjoy the new features. Version 4.0 has already hit the Google Play store for Android devices, as well as Apple’s App Store for iPhones and iPads.

Head to the apps store and search for Roku, and the app should appear top in the list. If you already have the app downloaded, you’ll see an ‘update’ option. Just tap that and the update will be installed on your phone. Otherwise, hit ‘install’ or ‘get’ and version 4.0 will be downloaded onto your device.
