Roku Streaming Players and Roku TV devices will be receiving an update to Roku OS 7.5, which adds loads of great new features including Live TV Pause, Mobile Private Listening, Audio Guides for the visually impaired and Play on Roku support for multiple users. Here’s everything you need to know about Roku OS 7.5, including supported devices and how to update.
What new features will my Roku player or Roku TV get with the OS 7.5 update?
The biggest new feature of Roku OS 7.5 is Live TV Pause, a feature coming to Roku TV models only. This allows you to pause and restart digital broadcast TV, with up to 90 minutes of pause time supported – great news if you need to make a full three course meal in the middle of your favourite show. For this feature to work, you need an antenna connected to your Roku TV and a USB flash drive with 16GB or more storage capacity.
Roku OS 7.5 also brings the Mobile Private Listening feature to all Roku TV models. Download the latest version of the Roku mobile app to your iPhone or Android phone and you can use your mobile to listen to your shows in private – just hook up a pair of headphones and you’re good to go.
Roku’s Audio Guide will be available on all Roku TV models as well as select Roku streaming players (namely the 4640X, 4630X, 4620X, 3710X, 3700X and 3600X). The Audio Guide feature uses text-to-speech to help with navigation of the Roku player’s interface and any menus. After updating to Roku OS 7.5, Audio Guide can be activated by pressing the * button on the Roku remote four times in a row.
If your Roku player’s remote has volume controls (available on the 4640x, 4630x, 4400x, 4230x and 4200x players), then good news! You can now control the volume level of your TV, as long as it supports volume control via HDMI Consumer Electronics Control (CEC).
Roku OS 7.5 also adds a feedback option, so you can tell Roku how good your streaming experience is with certain channels. Just press the * button on your remote when said channel is highlighted and choose ‘Give us feedback’ to get involved.
A new auto launch feature will automatically bring up the Roku Media Player when you slip a USB key into your Roku player, although this feature can be disabled from the Roku’s settings if you hate it.
Roku OS 7.5 also adds the existing screen mirroring feature to the Roku Premiere, Roku Premiere+ and Roku Ultra. The screen mirroring feature allows you to throw your Android or Windows device’s display onto your TV, so everyone can have a squint.
Play on Roku is now supported on multiple mobile devices too, while Roku OS 7.5 also improves the search experience and overall streaming performance.
