Samsung voice-activated Ass Recommendation personalises Smart TV. Did we hear that right?

Maybe it’s us, but see if you can watch Samsung’s ‘Talk To TV’ smart TV promo without hearing ‘Ass Recommendation’ after the second or third chorus…

The 80s white-rap-riffing successfully promotes the voice-controlled S Recommendation feature in Samsung’s 2013 Smart TV range.

Using the Touchpad Smart Remote, or the TV’s built-in microphone, you can ask your TV what’s on, search for TV recommendations, and set up recordings.

Samsung’s 2013 Smart TV is also – it claims – smart enough to learn TiVo-style what you like to watch so it will automatically record when you’re not there (if you’ve got a USB hard disc attached).

Sadly (and missing a trick, we’d argue), you can’t use your smartphone – Samsung or otherwise – as a gateway for S Recommendation. Maybe next year.

S Recommendation isn’t restricted to 2013 TVs, as the top tier 2012 Samsung Smart TVs will be upgradeable via a plug-in module from this summer.

If you dive into the video, it’s worth sticking around to the end for the caveats quickly scrolled across the screen, such as:

“Voice Interaction performance may vary depending on language, local dialect, pronunciation, voice and ambient noise levels.

“Certain features within smart TV services require internet access and may not be available based on service provider, language, dialect and region.

“Certain content must be purchased and may not be available based on product categories, models and territories.”

And finally, the real sting from our experience: “Certain sequences have been shortened.”
