While Sky will be broadcasting highlights from this year’s Isle of Wight and Download festivals in glorious HD, it won’t be showing them off in 3D.
Last year Sky Arts 1 broadcast six hours of live Isle of Wight footage in 3D as well as HD. Festival coverage on Sky this year won’t be getting the same treatment.
Read Recombu Digital’s guide to festival coverage on UK TV We’ve not received any official comment from Sky as to why this is. We understand that Sky feels that 3D is best for live events and as it’s not showing any live festival footage this year, that’s almost certainly the reason why.
Sky has been very keen to promote its 3D channel for live events, specifically Premier League football. The satellite TV broadcaster has even gone so far as to launch a 3D pub finder, helping fans find a watering hole where they can watch games in three dimensions while enjoying a pint.
Sky has also brought 3D golf from the Augusta Masters and Ryder Cup, 3D darts, and international test cricket, although this summer’s England v New Zealand and Ashes tests are not scheduled for the 3D treatment.
