Sky viewers denied full HD Proms 2013 in Red Button row with BBC: UPDATED

Sky viewers are again missing out on high definition extras as the BBC broadcasts 12 nights of The Proms via the Red Button HD.

The high definition Red Button stream is available on Freeview HD, YouView, Freesat HD and Virgin Media, but the BBC has not reached a deal to include it on Sky.

The BBC Red Button HD’s absence on Sky has already seen viewers denied an opportunity to see Andy Murray win the Wimbledon 2013 tennis tournament in 3D.

Sky declined to comment on the BBC Red Button HD, but the BBC said: “Sky was the only TV platform operator that wanted to charge the BBC for the EPG-listing of the Red Button HD stream and it’s not currently possible to access this stream through the Red Button application on Sky.

“We were unable to reach an agreement on these grounds; however we continue to evaluate ways to make the stream available.”

Commenting on the BBC’s Red Button HD Proms announcement, Trev said: “I see that licence payers who have Sky still cannot get a RED Button HD service. This is clear discrimination against a large proportion of licence payers. It time the BBC sorted this or at least paid compensation to Sky viewers.”

In the 2013 Proms, Sky viewers have already missed out on HD simulcasts of BBC Four’s coverage of concerts by the National Youth Orchestra USA, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

A further seven BBC Four performances with Red Button HD simulcast remain in the season, from the Bavarian Symphony Orchestra on Thursday (August 8) to the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain on September 6.

They are:

  • Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra: Thursday 8 August, 7.30pm
  • BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra: Friday 9 August, 7.30pm
  • Santa Cecilia: Thursday 15 August, 7.30pm
  • Bach Oratorios: Friday 16 August, 7.30pm
  • Hollywood Rhapsody Prom: Friday 30 August, 7.30pm
