Smart TV Tuesday: Sky News iPhone app update adds live blogging and galleries

Version two of the Sky News app is rolling onto iPhones with a new look, live blogging, tech news and a user report channel to contact the Sky Newsroom.

The new look brings Sky News on the iPhone closer to its iPad cousin with modular news sections and formatting for both portrait and landscape modes.

A Technology news tab joins UK News, World News, Politics, Showbiz and Strange News, with the ability to swipe between stories and categories.

It also adds picture galleries, interactive images, graphs, timelines and live blogging including Twitter updates. Users can also directly message the Sky Newsroom with their news stories or comments.

Andrew Hawken, Sky News Digital’s head of editorial, said: “This is a big step forward for our iPhone app. We are constantly striving to make the user experience the very best across all our platforms.

“I know our customers will enjoy the more intuitive approach we’ve created within the app as well as the richer and more in depth news experience it offers.”

The app, which has been downloaded more than three million times, still lets viewers watch Sky News live with either 3G or WiFi.

There’s no timeline as yet for updates to the Sky News app for Android, but Sky usually lets Android users stew for a bit.
