Virgin Media broadband-only £2.50 price rise coming in October – UPDATED

It’s price rise season. Sky broadband looks like its going up next month, TalkTalk line rental increases in October and now word comes of Virgin Media’s plans to up its broadband-only costs.

The Virgin Media 30Mbps and 60Mbps services will both go up by £2.50/month each from October 1 onwards.

Currently priced at £22.50/month and £27.50/month respectively, these packages which don’t require you to pay line rental (normally £14.99/month), will go up to £25/month and £30/month each.

Recombu Digital was told that customers who’ve recently signed up for deals which give customers the first six months at half price will continue to pay that rate until their discount period runs out, then the new full rate.

A Virgin Media spokesperson added: “As part of a review of our services, we’re changing the price for people taking just broadband from us and we’re talking to customers now to explain what’s happening.

“With our unique cable network, we’re the only provider able to supply broadband without needing a phone line and with the fastest widely available speeds and unbeatable service, Virgin Media remains great value for money.”

Compared to BT Infinity 1, which provides speeds of up-to-38Mbps for £38.45/month (including £15.45/month for line rental) this is certainly true, although BT’s connections don’t have any peak time traffic management.

Virgin Media’s broadband only deals are available as 18-month contracts. The Student Broadband deals, which are also broadband-only, can be had for nine months. These are aimed at second year undergraduates in rented accommodation.

Currently, Virgin Media Student Broadband costs £22.50/month and £27.50/month for 30Mbps and 60Mbps, plus a one-off £49.95 connection fee. We’ve asked if the prices for these services will be staying as they are for the forseeable and we’re waiting for confirmation.

Update: Virgin Media has confirmed that its Student Broadband packages will be going up by £2.50/month from October 1 as well.
