Virgin Media customers in Portsmouth have been left without broadband and TV thanks to road workers severing a piece of vital cable in the ground.
Work on the Northern Road bridge in Cosham yesterday saw important connections inadvertently cut, leaving customers without either service.
Affecting people primarily in Havant, Cowplain and Gosport, as well as some residents in Fareham, Virgin Media engineers are now on the case and the company aims to have all services resorted by midnight tonight.
A spokesperson for the company told us:
“A part of our network was damaged by road works to the north of Portsmouth affecting customers in parts of the city and the surrounding area. Our engineers have been working around the clock to repair this damage. Our customers have had their services re-established throughout the day, with all customers expected to have full services up and running again by midnight. We apologise for any disruption.”
Virgin Media’s Twitter profile and Facebook page has borne the brunt of much criticism, even though disruption to their own network isn’t the ISP’s fault. Still, the temporary loss of broadband goes to show how much we’ve come to depend on internet access as a modern utility.
Update: Virgin Media has confirmed that all services in Portsmouth have been restored.
