Virgin Media has launched an Android version of its TV Anywhere remote catch-up service.
Over 30 Android devices can use the app including popular devices like the HTC One and the Google Nexus 7 as well as old schoolers like the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the Motorola RAZRi.
A total of 67 Virgin TV channels can be accessed on mobile devices, including ITV, Channel 5, BT Sport and Premier Sport.
Read Recombu Digital’s guide to Virgin TV AnywhereVirgin Media says that this makes TV Anywhere a more comprehensive service than Sky Go, which currently provides access to a total of 57 channels. Like Sky Go, the total number of channels you can access on Virgin TV Anywhere depends on what channels you get under your TV subscription.
As well as letting customers watch live TV on phones and tablets, Virgin TV Anywhere lets TiVo customers remotely set and delete recordings on the go and when you’re in front of your TV the app turns your phone into a smart remote control.
Despite the TV Anywhere app coming to Android devices, it must be noted that not every phone will let you watch live TV on the move. The HTC Desire X, Samsung Galaxy Ace, Galaxy Ace 2, Galaxy Fame S, Sony Xperia U and the ZTE Blade III will not be able to stream live shows, but the smart remote and TiVo management features will be accessible.
Virgin TV Anywhere: Even more channels available online
While you can access up to 67 channels on mobile devices, the desktop version of Virgin TV Anywhere lets you stream up to 90 channels.
Due to rights, Sky channels are currently not available to view on the TV Anywhere mobile apps. On-demand content from certain channels including Comedy Central and MTV is also not yet available, but this is something Virgin Media hopes to change soon.
Recent additions to the TV Anywhere line up include all of the UKTV channels, Alibi, Dave, Drama, Good Food, Home, Really, Watch, Yesterday and CBS Reality.
Keith Porritt, UKTV’s Executive Director Commercial said: “The extension of our partnership with Virgin Media is a mark of UKTV’s commitment to providing viewers with even more access to our award-winning and increasingly popular channels.
“We have committed to spending £110 million on-screen this year, making our channels stronger and more exciting and now Virgin Media customers will be able to view these channels anywhere they like.”
