Yahoo tries its hand at original TV programming

Yahoo is taking its lead from Netflix and Amazon with the ailing web company commissioning six original television shows.

Among the shows is a series about a four-inch tall private detective and another one where celebrities talk about the first time they made love.

The firm has also partnered with wrestling organisation WWE to distribute video over the internet.

Three shows coming this autumn are Tiny Commando, about “a four-inch-tall private investigator who uses his awesome fleet of vehicles to fight crime”. The show stars Hangover actor Ed Helms. We Need Help, a comedy about a personal assistant and Losing Your Virginity with John Stamos, in which the actor interviews celebrities about their first sexual experience.

The firm is also making three other lifestyle shows Fashion Recipe, Cinema & Spice and Grill Girls. These three will be showing “later this year”, according to Yahoo.

Among the WWE content Yahoo will be showing is Monday Night Raw pre-show: A 30-minute pre-show to each new Monday Night Raw will be exclusive to Yahoo. There will also be two weekly series of 50 episodes per year will be produced exclusively for distribution on Yahoo.

“In the last year, we have more than doubled the original video programming on Yahoo to become one of the Web’s largest content publishers,” said Erin McPherson, Yahoo’s vice president and head of video. “The new shows and partnerships we’re announcing at Yahoo!’s NewFront demonstrate how we are building scale, reaching more targeted audiences, and innovating with content.”
