Yorkshire town of Settle gets free public WiFi from Clannet

Residents of the Yorkshire town of Settle can now enjoy free public WiFi thanks to Clannet.

The rural wireless ISP is providing free WiFi to the market town thanks to funding from Vibrant Settle project and Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust.

Settle is the latest rural location to benefit from Clannet’s wireless hotspots programme. The ISP has set up a number of free WiFi points in towns and villages across the UK, including Appleton Wiske, Bedale and Wensleydale.

Read our guide to Clannet wireless broadbandAs well as supplying WiFi to individual town centres, Clannet also supplies wireless broadband in Alton, Aylesby, Biggin, Nun & Moor Monkton and the Vale of Mowbray.

Wireless broadband along with fixed 4G and satellite broadband is a viable alternative to fixed-line based solutions, as it’s not delivered via a phone line.

As well as avoiding you having to pay line rental, customers who can get it may be able to enjoy double figure download speeds in areas where there’s not yet superfast provided by BT, Virgin Media or BDUK projects.

Clannet, a contraction of ‘Community Local Area Network,’ has set up five rural broadband networks using money from Defra’s ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) and local investment.
