Amazon greenlights Alpha House season 2, Chris Carter’s The After and 5 more pilots

Amazon has greenlit a second series of Alpha House plus full seasons of six more TV shows, including The After, written by X-Files creator Chris Carter.

Its Amazon Studios arm is keeping the John Goodman-led comedy as well as picking up six of the ten shows it tested in its most recent pilot season.

Written by Academy Award-nominee and Pulitzer Prize-winner Garry Trudeau and produced by Trudeau, Elliot Webb and Jonathan Alter, Alpha House is a comedy about four misfit senators who rent a house together in Washington.

“We are delighted that Alpha House is a winner among Prime members,” said Roy Price, director of Amazon Studios. “More than 6,000 customers gave the show a perfect five-star rating and have posted glowing, witty and compelling reviews asking for a second season. We’re excited to begin production and keep the story about these senators alive.”

Of the six shows picked up, four are aimed at adult audiences. The aforementioned The After follows eight strangers who are thrown together by mysterious forces and must help each other survive in a violent world that defies explanation.

Bosch is a crime drama based on Michael Connelly’s best selling books while Mozart in the Jungle stars Gael Garcia Bernal in a comedy drama that lifts the lid on the rock and roll lifestyle of classical musicians.

Transparent is a comedy drama about a Los Angeles family coming to terms with the announcement that the father is about to have a sex change.

Amazon is also given the go ahead to two children’s series. Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street is a live-action adventure show created by David Anaxagoras, a pre-school teacher and first-time writer who was discovered through Amazon Studios’ open-door submission process.

Also given the nod is Wishenpoof! an animated series that revolves around Bianca, who has “wish magic,” to, say, turn into mermaid if she wants to go on an undersea adventure. Sounds a bit like Mr. Benn for the 21st Century to us.

Amazon will be shooting The After, Bosch, Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent in 4K Ultra HD.

The announcement comes as rumours of a Kindle phone surface. Prime Instant Video (formerly known as Lovefilm) has only ever been available on Kindle Fire tablets.
