YouView Android app release date: May 2013 ETA – UPDATED

YouView’s Android app looks set to be released this May. Delivering a keynote speech at TV Connect 2013, director of TV for TalkTalk Laurence Mial-d’Août revealed plans for the app to launch soon, but didn’t give a specific release date.

As well as this, there were also hints of a companion app appearing on another platform. Mial-d’Août wrapped up her speech with a summary of YouView’s second screen plans:

“YouView has launched its iOS app, it’s planning to launch its Android app in May and we’ll follow suit with another companion app. Where we see the future in terms of conversation we will of course follow the market, where people want to experience TV.”

YouView for Android – We May well see it soon

Read Recombu Digital’s guide to YouViewWe knew that YouView for Android was headed our way sometime this year. This is the clearest indication yet as to when it’ll actually arrive.

Outside of iOS and Android, does ‘another companion app’ hint that there’s scope for Windows Phone apps, or services for the new BlackBerry BB10 platform?

As with the YouView iOS app, you should be able to flick through a seven-day programme guide, set recordings and series link programmes once you’ve paired your Android phone or tablet with your YouView box.

There’s still no information on the minimum specs required for the Android app, but we’d expect that most if not all of the current generation of Android phones and tablets will be able to run it.

Update 1: YouView has now confirmed that the Android app will be launching sometime in June. There’s no concrete date for this just yet but we’ve been able to get some quick hands-on time with the in-progress app

Update 2: YouView has launched its Android app.
