YouView Android app released: Remote Record TV Guide

YouView has released its long-awaited Android app on Google Play.

The app lets YouView owners schedule recordings remotely and browse the same seven day TV guide available on the YouView boxes at home.

YouView has tailored the app so that it will work with the majority of Android phones and tablets out there. Devices running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and above should have no problems getting the app to work.

The app has been optimised for a handful of popular phones, the HTC One S, LG Nexus 4, Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy S2, and Samsung Galaxy Ace. So if you’ve got one of those, you can expect a smoother experience.

Good things come to those who wait: YouView’s Android app is here

The app lets you set recordings remotely, but if you want to record an episode of something remotely you’ll need to do so at least 15 minutes before a show starts to give the app and your YouView box time to do its thing.

Whether your Android phone or tablet is connected to WiFi or 3G/4G, you’ll be able to access the remote record feature. During a hands-on briefing with the app in May, YouView CEO Richard Horton told us that he’d been able to set a recording back at home all the way from Seoul, so you don’t even need to be in the same hemisphere if you’re away on a trip and realise that you absolutely have to record all the episodes of Pointless.

For those of you with multiple phones and tablets or families, you can connect up to five Android devices to your YouView box. You pair phones and tablets by way of a numerical code found under Settings > Device Management > Mobile Devices on your YouView box.

Further updates to both the Android and iOS YouView apps will be rolled out later this year. Despite the time it’s taken in getting a YouView app launched on Google Play, YouView has told us that it’s committed to rolling out updates in tandem, so everyone should get the same updates at the same time.
