1: iOS 5 Notification Centre

Swipe down at any point to access all push notifications, including email, text messages, Facebook and Twitter notifications. Instead of just displaying the date and time, the lock screen now displays alerts which you can launch the applications instantly. Yes, we know this is something HTC Sense already does, but it will make a huge improvement to the usability of the device, for instance have you ever had a session of Mass Effect interrupted by a text message popping up on your screen? Now the notification appears discretely as a bar at the top.

The iPhone 4 has an excellent 5-megapixel camera and 720p HD movie mode, but previously the only way to access the camera was by tapping the icon. Now on the lock screen you double tap the Home icon and a camera icon appears, taking you directly to the camera application.

One of the main criticisms of the camera was the lack of tweakable features. Now along with grid lines that aid composition, you can pinch to zoom and use the AE/AF lock to set the exposure and focus by tapping.  In post-production, you can crop, rotate, red-eye reduction and one-click enhance.

Finally, although the iPhone 4 doesn’t have a dedicated shutter, you can now use the volume-up button to take a picture.

3: iOS 5 PC Free/ iCloud Backup

Now the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch will work straight out of the box and you also don’t have to connect to your computer to back-up. iCloud Backup automatically backs your device up over WiFi on a daily basis, sharing updated information between devices including a laptop and phone.

Existing users will need to connect to a computer to get IOS 5, but from then on software upgrades can be done over the air – just like Android.

4: iOS 5 iMessage

Certain to be a Blackberry messenger rival, send messages over WiFi or 3G between IOS devices. Built into the messaging app, you’ll be able to send group messages and sharing media including photos and videos.

iOS 5: Reader

Tap Reader and it automatically puts a story into a single scrolling piece of text you can read, removing all distractions. Instead of just emailing the link, you can also read the contents in an email.

Reading List is more interesting, put a web page in the Reading List and it appears in all your devices, so you can start reading an article on your iPad and the continue it on your iPhone 4.

6: iCloud: App Integration

iCloud has deeper integrated with your apps. Not only can see the purchase history of apps you’ve brought and download them even if they already have been deleted, but future apps will be download  to all devices automatically

Buy a book and it’s downloaded to all devices, so if you read a book on one device, the bookmark is pushed to other devices, so you can continue reading from iPhone to iPad.

7: iCloud Photo Stream

Instead of having to swap photos between an iPhone 4 to an iPad using a Mac, photos are automatically uploaded to the Cloud, and downloaded to IOS devices. Pictures already stored on iPhoto can be uploaded and shared between devices. Apple TV users can also access Photo Stream, providing another way of displaying pictures on a TV

Photo Stream can store a 1000 photos at once, they can be stored in the Cloud for 30 days. Once in Photo Stream they can easily be saved to a folder.

8: iTunes in the Cloud

For the first time buy a track in iTunes and it is stored in the cloud where it can automatically be shared between 10 devices, downloading over WiFi and 3G. Like iCloud app integration, it stores your purchase history, enabling you to download a track to another device.

9: iOS 5 Split keyboard

As well as the conventional QWERTY keyboard, the keyboard is split; half on the right and half on the other. This enables you to still use your iPad while you type, perhaps looking at a web page or writing a letter. It’s a subtle tweak, but one that will appeal to people who use their iPad for work or emailing.

10: iOS 5 Multitasking gestures

Familiar to MacBook uses, new multitasking gestures are now available for the iPad. Scroll down using four or five fingers to show the multitasking bar. Swap between apps by swiping left and right.
