Amazon updates the Kindle Paperwhite with a more responsive display

Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite is pretty much the best ereader you can buy right now, and the latest model is even better. The online retailer announced last night that it will be refreshing the Paperwhite with a multitude of improvements and additions.

The new Paperwhite includes a new touchscreen and display. Amazon says that the new touchscreen should be more responsive than the one found on the previous Paperwhite, and that the display itself will have a higher contrast as well as whiter whites. The built-in light that illuminates the display has also been tweaked to provide a better reading experience.

And the software that powers the Paperwhite has some new additions too. There’s a new Page Flip feature, as well as Goodreads integration and a FreeTime mode that helps parents manage their children’s reading. Other minor tools include a vocabulary builder, Smart Lookup, and in-line footnotes.

The refreshed model will be made available at the same price as the old Paperwhite – £109 for the WiFi model and £169 for the WiFi and 3G version – and begin shipping on September 30th. Pre-orders are open right now.
